The group just needs to go through security screening before entering the building and in May, there might be a long wait.

Today, you will also experience the inspiring monuments and memorials of Washington DC including the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and the Korean Memorial.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall pays tribute to the brave members of the U.S. Armed Forces who fought in the Vietnam War and were killed or missing in action. The memorial consists of three separate parts: The Three Soldiers statue, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. The World War II Memorial honors the 16 million people who served as part of the American armed forces during World War II, including more than 400,000 who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The memorial sits along the central vista of the National Mall, at the east end of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial resides on the National Mall, southeast of the Lincoln Memorial and just south of the Reflecting Pool. All of its components, including its walls, stainless steel statues and Pool of Remembrance, are dedicated to the U.S. Armed Forces that served and sacrificed during the Korean War.  Finally, the grand Lincoln Memorial towers over the Reflecting Pool, anchoring the western end of the National Mall. Take a stroll toward the memorial and watch as it gradually gets larger. When you stand directly in front, gaze at the handsome marble columns surrounded by greenery, part of a design inspired by ancient Greek temples. There are 36 columns, each one representing one state in the U.S. at the date of President Lincoln’s death.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 5

What was Beethoven thinking when he wrote the four most recognizable notes in the history of music? The iconic opening motif of Beethoven’s Fifth has astounded audiences since its 1808 premiere, and the work has continued to be one of the most influential pieces of Western music in the world—so much so that the Allied Forces in World War II used the motif as code for victory, the four-note rhythm representing ‘V’ in Morse code. Conductor Krzysztof Urbański will bring fresh perspective to this revolutionary masterpiece with all of its original urgency and triumph intact in a program that includes Vilde Frang playing Elgar’s Violin Concerto.

In love and war, what will you stand for?

Tosca

Music by Giacomo Puccini / Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa

Scenery provided by Seattle Opera

Dawn breaks on 19th-century Rome, where zealous painter Cavaradossi and passionate singer Tosca are deeply in love. When Cavaradossi hides escaped political prisoner Angelotti from the villainous chief of police Scarpia, a tragic conflict unfurls. Caught between loyalty to her rebel lover and Scarpia’s web of deceit, Tosca must take matters into her own hands—but no one is guaranteed to get out alive. Puccini’s breathtaking opera, with its renowned “Vissi d’arte” aria, makes a triumphant return to WNO. Elegant sets depicting grand Roman scenes create the backdrop to one of opera’s most suspenseful and popular dramas. With gripping political corruption, soaring music, and the legendary devastating finale, Tosca is a sumptuous tale of ill fated love that amazes and captivates new and longtime opera lovers alike.
