The annual Munich Opera Festival takes place at the Bayerische Staatsoper. It is one of the oldest festivals of its kind. It began under General Director Karl von Perfall, who held office from 1867 to 1893, and organised a festival summer for the first time in 1875 with operas by Mozart and musical dramas by Wagner.
