In May 2021, the Gewandhausorchester will host a Mahler Festival in Leipzig, the city in which Mahler became a true symphonic composer. The festival presents a unique opportunity for music lovers to hear the complete symphonies and other orchestral works interpreted by 10 world class orchestras over 12 days. Leipzig and the Gewandhausorchester offer a particularly authentic setting for the Festival as Mahler spent two years in the city, conducting the Gewandhausorchester almost daily.

Our tour includes three-nights in cultural Leipzig allowing you to immerse yourself in the city’s rich cultural and music history. As part of your tour, you will see the city sights on a guided tour and hear all about the history of Leipzig. In your free time, enjoy the many museums on offer, do some shopping or simply relax and enjoy a coffee at one of Leipzig’s many cafés. Tour highlights a concert performance by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle and second concert performance by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Fabio Luisi.

Leipzig can look back on a long and historically notable past. Such examples include the Reformation in 1539 with Martin Luther's sermon in St. Thomas Church, and the decisive battle against Napoleon in 1813. The city, was home to many great composers who combined established its reputation as a city of music and Leipzig's musical tradition is truly exceptional. This is the city where Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert and Clara Schumann all worked, and where Richard Wagner was born and received his musical training. And musical history is still being written in Leipzig today, with world-famous ensembles performing to audiences throughout the year in its famous Gewandhaus.
