Itinerary

Day 1 Civitavecchia, Italy

Following your flight to Rome, you will be transferred to the port at Civitavecchia to board the MSC Splendida.

Day 2 Palermo, Italy

Palermo is the capital of the Italian island, Sicily, an island renowned as a vacation destination due to its great beauty and historical significance. Once an important Mediterranean centre, Palermo still displays the grandeur of its former greatness. Large, spacious and colourful, Palermo is set on the plain of Conca d’Oro (Golden Shell) between two magnificent headlands. The area has been dominated by many civilisations over the centuries, including the Romans, Carthaginians, Byzantines, Greeks, Arabs, Normans, Swabians and the Spanish. Thanks to its eclectic past, Palermo offers an intriguing mix of cultures

Day 3 Cagiliari, Sardinia

From an MSC ship on the Mediterranean Sea, the view of Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital and main port, is striking. Crowned by its historic nucleus squeezed within a protective ring of Pisan fortifications, Cagliari’s setting is enhanced by the calm lagoons to the east and west of the city, a habitat for cranes, cormorants and flamingos. During your excursion to the centre of Cagliari, the promenades along Via Manno are the smartest you’ll see in Sardinia. These then drop down to the noisier Piazza Yenne and Largo Carlo Felice, around which most of the shops, restaurants, banks and hotels are located. At the bottom of Cagliari, the porticos of portside Via Roma shelter more shops and bars. Cagliari’s main attractions are the archaeological museum with its captivating collection of nuraghic statuettes, the city walls with their two Pisan towers looking down over the Mediterranean Sea and the port, and the cathedral – all within easy distance of each other. There are also a sprinkling of Roman remains, including an impressive amphitheatre, while nearby excursions include Nora, the most complete ancient site on Sardinia, and the islands of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro.

Day 4 Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Discover Palma…Perhaps The Mediterranean’s Most Pleasant Surprise? Welcome to Majorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands and home to the delightful city of Palma, one of the Mediterranean’s premier cruise ports. Palma sits on a magnificent bay that provides a natural harbour for the hundreds of expensive yachts that moor here and the dozens of elegant cruise liners that come to call. The yachts are polished to a mirror finish and seem to wait expectantly for their wealthy owners to take them out for a spin, whilst the cruise ships are altogether busier, bringing thousands of passengers into the this lovely cosmopolitan city. The elegant Paseo Maritimo runs from the docks, past the marina, to the magnificent gothic cathedral – the enormous building is well worth a visit as are the numerous shops, bars and restaurants that are within easy reach.

Day 5 Valencia, Spain

Valencia is third biggest city in Spain and although it boasts many great historic, cultural and modern visitor attractions, Valencia is one of the least touristic cities in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula. Although the outskirts of Valencia are modern and industrialised, the historic heart is very beautiful and typically Spanish, almost untouched by mass tourism. Valencia is the home of the rice dish paella, one of the most spectacular fiestas in Spain and (reputedly) the Holy Grail from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper. We are sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Valencia and the warm, inviting character of its inhabitants.

Day 6 Marseille, France

Whether it is basking in the Mediterranean sunshine or being cooled by the famous Mistral wind France’s second-largest city and the capital of the Provence- Côte d’Azur region, is always a fascinating place to visit and a wonderful place for a leisurely lunch. As France’s most important port, Marseille boasts connections with Africa, Italy and Spain. The strong mistral wind blows away all traces of pollution and provides a clarity of air so pure that many famous artists have been attracted to the city: Cézanne; Braque; Derain; Dufy and Marquet.

Day 7 Genoa, Italy

Cradled between land and sea and with a working port, the Italian vacation destination of Genoa on the west coast of Italy displays its past through her many palaces and the surrounding ancient terraced hills. Genoa has many different faces; at once a modern metropolis and a rigorous custodian of artistic heritage, as well as an industrious marketplace with centuries-old parks perfect for relaxation.

Day 8 Civitavecchia, Italy

The port of Civitavecchia is one of the largest in Italy and is, of course, a destination of MSC Cruises in the Mediterranean. Civitavecchia enjoys a millenary history due to its coves along the coast, which offered a perfect shelter for vessels, making it a natural port long before cruise ships sailed the seas, and in fact the port was known to the Romans as Centumcellae. During your holiday in Civitavecchia you can easily visit its centre on foot. Amongst the most important monuments to visit are the Forte Michelangelo, built by Bramante in the 16th century, the ancient walls of the old port, where there is a fountain in travertine marble by Vanvitelli, and the Rock, an inexpugnable fortress that has been looming over the city and port for over a thousand years. In Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Civitavecchia’s main square, one can admire the majestic baroque cathedral dedicated to St. Francis, built at the end of the 18th century on a smaller church which could no longer host a rapidly growing community. Following disembarkation, you will be transferred to the airport to get your flight back home Dublin.
