Later today, you may want to simply relax with a glass of wine on the deck overlooking the Nenana River or on the fireside patio outside of Fannie Q’s Saloon. (B, L, D)

Day 8 Whittier, Alaska, USA

Enjoy a scenic rail journey through some of the best wilderness on our exclusive Direct-to-the-Wilderness rail service toward Whittier, where your cruise ship awaits. (B, L)

Day 9 Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

Just 30 miles north of Yakutat is Hubbard Glacier, the longest tidewater glacier in the world. The 8-mile-wide glacier is easily Alaska’s most active. The riptides and currents that flow between Gilbert Point and the face of the glacier, a mere 1000ft away, are so strong that they cause Hubbard to calve almost continuously at peak tides. The entire area, part of the 545-sq-mile Russell Fjord Wilderness, is one of the most interesting places in Alaska and usually visited through flightseeing or boat tours.

Day 10 Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

Glacier Bay is the crowning jewel of the cruise-ship industry and a dreamy destination for anybody who has ever paddled a kayak. Seven tidewater glaciers spill out of the mountains and fill the sea with icebergs of all shapes, sizes and shades of blue, making Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve an icy wilderness renowned worldwide.

Apart from its high concentration of tidewater glaciers, Glacier Bay is a dynamic habitat for humpback whales. Other wildlife seen at Glacier Bay includes porpoises, sea otters, brown and black bears, wolves, moose and mountain goats.

The park is an expensive side trip, even by Alaskan standards. Plan on spending at least $400 for a trip from Juneau. Of the 500,000 annual visitors, more than 95% arrive aboard a ship and never leave it. The rest is a mixture of tour-group members, who head straight for the lodge, and backpackers, who gravitate toward the free campground.

Day 11 Skagway, Alaska

t first sight, Skagway appears to be solely an amusement park for cruise-ship day-trippers, a million of whom disgorge onto its sunny boardwalks every summer. But, haunted by Klondike ghosts and beautified by a tight grid of handsome false-fronted buildings, this is no northern Vegas. Skagway’s history is very real.

During the 1898 gold rush, 40,000 stampeders passed through the nascent settlement; they were a sometimes-unsavoury cast of characters who lived against a backdrop of brothels, gunfights and debauched entertainment wilder than the Wild West. Today, the main actors are seasonal workers, waitstaff posing in period costume and storytelling national-park rangers. Indeed, most of the town’s important buildings are managed by the National Park Service (NPS) and this, along with Skagway’s location on the cusp of a burly wilderness with trails (including the legendary Chilkoot) leading off in all directions, has saved it from overt Disneyfication. Dive in and join the show.
